NAME OF PROJECT: Earthquake Relief Project for Léogâne, Haiti
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM:
On January 12, 2010 Haiti was strucked by a devastating Earthquake that demolished the capital city, Port-au-Prince, and many other outskirt regions. Léogâne, another city nearby was badly hit (90% of the population is affected). The needs are numerous; infrastructure, sustained health care services, food distribution, drinking water and creation of jobs. Léogâne is situated at approximately one hour from Port-au-Prince; however, little help has reached this region. HANA already has a strong affiliation with the nursing school of Léogâne that is also badly battered; therefore, this project will be focused on this particular region to provide our services. OBJECTIVES:
HANA is a 501 (c3) not-for-profit organization whose mission is to unite nurses as a group to share and promote ideas of interest to the group and to become effectively involved with the issues and services relevant to the health and welfare of the community. One of HANA’s objectives is to provide compassionate, competent, and quality health care to various communities in Florida and abroad. HANA has already established ongoing medical missions to Thomazeau, Grand Boulage in collaboration with Friends of Haiti, and with the Haitian American Professionals Coalition (HAPC) in other locations in Haiti such as Petavy, Cayes-Jacmel and in the Dominican Republic.
Based on the current situation in Haiti and in Léogâne in particular, where the needs are numerous; sustainability of our projects is very important. Therefore, HANA has decided to develop this project in that region to respond to the multiple hardships of the population. HANA’s ongoing support to the School of Nursing along with this ongoing project will maintain a stronger collaboration and an increased visibility in the region.
The goals of this project are:
- To provide direct health care services to the population in Léogâne.
- To educate the affected population about the risks of infection with the injuries sustained during the earthquake.
- To educate and offer psychosocial services to the injured on how to cope and live with their new disabilities.
- To train Faculté des Sciences Infirmières de L’université Episcopale d’Haiti in Léogâne (FSIL) students and faculty members to maintain standards of the art and science of nursing and to become community health agents who will advocate and maintain the health care services for the specified population.
- To seek funding for the realization of the project.
- To establish ongoing medical missions in Léogâne.
