The Haitian Nurses Association of Florida (H.A.N.A.)
was founded in 1984 by Jacqueline Dasque and Alice Casimir, two registered
professional nurses practicing in Miami, who saw the need to establish an
organization that would provide health care services to migrant workers in the
Homestead (Florida) area.
H.A.N.A. was incorporated as a not-for-profit association in August 1985, and
has since been serving the Haitian community as well as other minority
communities in the South Florida area.
The goals of the association are: 1) To provide Haitian nurses with the
opportunity to share and promote the ideas of interest to nursing, and 2) To
become effectively involved in issues and services relevant to the health and
welfare of the Haitian community of South Florida.
Considering the cultural and ethnic diversity of South Florida, H.A.N.A.
networks with other organizations in the community to promote healthcare through
culturally sensitive teaching. H.A.N.A. holds annual health fairs for blood
pressure and diabetes screening, immunization drives, educational programs on
HIV/AIDS, as well as other health concerns. H.A.N.A. works in cooperation with
the County Department of Children and Families, the Florida Nurses Association
Task Force on Cultural Diversity, Project Medishare of Miami (sponsored by the
University of Miami/Department of Family Medicine), which is an organization
committed to help reshape the system of delivering health care in Haiti.
